Which kindle should I buy in Australia?

Kindle fire VS e-ink kindle

If you want an e-book reader in Australia I recommend the new e-ink kindle. Kindle Fire is an Android tablet which is primary functions are for musics, videos, internet and games. It is currently available to US only due to digital contents restriction. Some features of kindle fire will not work outside U.S. including streaming videos and the App store!

The e-ink kindle

New kindle is the light version for starter. It has same e-ink display as kindle touch. There’s no physical keyboard. Navigation and typing have to be done using 5-way controller. Battery life lasts for 1 month and no support for audio files and text-to-speech. This kindle is perfect for pure readers who only use kindle to read.

Kindle touch is top-of-the-line kindle available right now. It has full options including touch screen, text-to-speech and longer battery life (2 months). Also featured on kindle touch is “X-ray” which allows you to scan a character, historical figures, and interesting phrase. With touch screen, you can easily surf the web, take notes, or look up words on your kindle.

Kindle Touch 3g has free 3g connection. You can buy and download e-books without WiFi connection. It’s more convenient and perfect for travelers because Amazon offers free 3g service in more than 100 countries.

Where should I buy a new kindle 4 in Australia?

I recommend buying a kindle at Amazon US store. Price is always cheaper than Australian retailers. You kindle will be automatically associated with your amazon account so buying e-books is just one step ahead. Amazon sometime offers special price on kindle accessories such as cover and charger when you buy a new kindle.

Step by step guide to buy a kindle/kindle touch in Australia

1. To buy a kindle from amazon, make sure you go to Kindle sale page for Australia.

If you accidentally land on a wrong page, you may find a blue bar like this one.

2. Choose Australia and add kindle/kindle touch to your shopping cart. Explore kindle accessories store and add cover/adapter as you need.

Don’t forget to check for special discount on kindle accessories when purchase with a new kindle.

3. Proceed to check out. If you don’t have an Amazon account, you have to create one at this step. During check out, you have to provide shipping address and payment method. There are two shipping options you can choose :

  • Expedited International Shipping costs $11.98 (approx. within 1 week)
  • Priority International Courier costs $20.98 (approx. 2-5 days)

During check out, guaranteed arrival date and total costs will be displayed before your order is final. No extra tax will be collected when your kindle arrives in Australia.

Warranty

Kindle purchased from Amazon also includes 1 year warranty. You can talk to Amazon’s online support to ask for change if your kindle broke. UPS service will pick it up at your office in Australia and a new one will be sent to you (usually arrives within 1 week).

Don’t be tricked : Kindle with special offers

You may notice that there are kindles with special offer which have lower price on Amazon.com. “Special offers” means they come with sponsored ads and cheaper price. The ads target customers in the U.S. So they’re currently not available for international shipping.

If you’re going to buy a kindle from local store, don’t forget to check if it is a kindle with special offers. Some retailers in Australia imported this ads-included kindle and sell it at unreasonably high price.

We have to thanks Tayla who mentioned this in her comment.

I’ve just received my kindle 4 from amazon. It’s a trimmed off version of the K3. Slimmer, faster, and no keyboard. Overall, I like it – a basic kindle just for reading at more affordable price.

  2. Keira Keir

This version looks tougher than K3. Hope it won’t break easily.

  3. Lucy Ness

Just got a kindle 4 in Australia. At first, I’m a little nervous about the onscreen keyboard. Actually, it works pretty well. You can hold the 5-way controller and the selector will pass through each letter quickly.

  4. Edward P

This new kindle looks more expensive than kindle 3. I prefer grey color to graphite.

  5. Dillon Rapkin

I spend much less money on paperback since I’ve got my kindle. I prefer reading on kindle, it’s lighter and small enough to take anywhere.

  6. Conner Lin.

I’ve bought a kindle 3 from a local retailer because I concerned about online payment security. I feel a little disappointed after reading your article because eventually, I have to create Amazon account and make online payment to buy kindle books. My price is much more expensive!

  7. Lara

When will kindle touch available for Australia?

  8. Angela

Kindle 4 is amazing, and Marware Eco-vue cover from amazon.com looks great on my kindle. Worth my time to wait for 5 days shipping from USA. Thanks for a very helpful article.

  9. Adam Harding

I went to a shop to find a kindle yesterday. What I found is a kindle 4 with AU charger and USB replacement cable bundle price at $189. How can that be so expensive?? All I need is only a kindle and a charger.

  10. Tayla

If you’re going to buy a kindle from local retailer, don’t forget to check if it is a kindle with special offer (sponsored ads). I saw a website offering kindle 4 with advertisement at $159. That’s very expensive. This is sold only $79 at amazon.com!!

    • Nicky

Thanks a lot, Tayla. I was almost tricked. I think “special offer” is an added value, actually it’s a kindle with advertisement which is sold cheaper in the U.S.

  11. Tomtom

Thanks, Tayla. Your comment is very helpful and I think everyone should read it before considering where to buy a new kindle.

  12. Maya

One thing I want to say about kindle 4: It’s really lighter than a book!

  13. Bob007

Kindle DX is now 32% ($120) off on Amazon. In case you want a large kindle with larger text.

  14. Rory

Hi, is it possible to buy a kindle fire in Australia?

    • Andrew Mc

It is possible but not recommended. Kindle fire in designed for working in U.S. Amazon App store won’t work outside U.S., so you can’t buy any apps. I would get an iPad 2 instead. It has better performance and bigger screen. Or, if you’re just looking for an e-reader, buy an e-ink kindle.

  15. Xoomer

A kindle touch would be a perfect gift for Christmas if it’s available to order in Australia. I’m so upset.

  16. Danny

If my friend buy me a kindle touch from U.S., will it work normally in Australia?

    • Andrew Mc

Sure, Danny. Kindle touch from U.S. will work normally in Australia. The only reason why Amazon don’t ship kindle touch to Australia is it doesn’t have enough products to serve large demand during holiday season in U.S.

  17. Ralph

I think I’ve made a right choice buying a kindle 4 without touchscreen. Its functions are sufficient for all my need. I only use kindle as a reading device. If you love reading, give it a try. It’s cheaper than a dinner out!

  18. Sandy

Hi, are kindle e-books different by countries? I mean can I access all kindle e-books on U.S. store?

    • Andrew Mc

Kindle contents is slightly different by regions. As of Dec 2011, there are 910,000 books plus U.S. and international newspapers and magazines available for Australia. You can preview kindle bookstore for Australia here. Choose Australia from the left side bar.

  19. Rob Liscomb

The new kindle fits my need perfectly. I just want a reading device that’s easy to carry around. It’s convenient and easy to use. I have no regret.

  20. Anne88

From my perspective, battery life is the best feature of kindle reader. I never think of an electronic device which can last for months without recharging. It’s very convenient for me because I don’t have to carry power adapter during my vacation.

  21. Tea

Hi, I used to read academic PDF document on my iPad. But I prefer a print-out version because it’s more comfortable to read. But when I’ve got my kindle, I never use my printer again. :D

  22. K D

    Hello

I purchased my Kindle last year and adore it. Unfortunately I have damaged the connection point that houses the charging chord, I have obviously tried to put it in upside down and wrecked it in the process. I have no hesitation in ordering another Kindle but my questions are:

What about the books I have already downloaded? Am I somehow able to retrieve them?

Do I have to start up a new account?

Can you please advise Am lost without my Kindle

    Many thanks

    • Andrew Mc

You don’t need to start up a new account. All books you’ve purchased will be accessible by your new kindle without additional cost.

  23. Julia

At last kindle touch is official available for Australia. I can’t wait to have it!

  24. Does power adapter for kindle 3 fit the kindle touch? Or do I need to buy a new power adapter for kindle touch?
    Please help, thanks.

  25. Ryan

I received a kindle touch wifi from amazon.com this morning. Shipping is fast as expected (I chose faster delivery with additional $10). The kindle touch is very easy to navigate compared to the kindle 3. And the weight is also very light. A great reading device everyone should have.

  26. Naomi

I love metal color of kindle touch. It looks more expensive than graphite.

  27. Ms. H

I’ve seen teasers to suggest there may be a colour version of Kindle
Touch available in March 2012? I’m keen on the Touch, but if the
colour version is coming, how long until we could get them delivered
    in Australia?

    • Andrew Mc

First, I don’t think there will be kindle touch with color display because it would not make a big different from kindle fire.

Second, kindle touch 3g is now still available only in the U.S. So the new generation kindle touch is not likely to be available to Australia soon. Amazon has regularly announced new kindle model before Thanksgiving.

  28. J M

If I purchase a book can the same book be downloaded onto my husbands
    Kindle.
We both have Kindle touch models.

  29. D F

    Hi
I forgot my password and credit card details from when I started the account.
Can you please help me reset it.

    • Andrew Mc

I’m not sure if you’re asking how to reset your kindle to factory setting?
      If so, here’s the solution.

      1. From the Home screen, press Menu.
      2. Select Settings.
      3. Press Menu again and select Reset to Factory Defaults.

This may take a few minutes to complete. All downloaded contents will be removed but you can re-download your purchased contents again after registering your kindle with your amazon account.

  30. Lara

I try to pre-order a kindle touch 3g at Amazon.com but they ask for my credit card number. Do I have to pre-pay for my items?

    • Andrew Mc

Lara, you have to enter your credit card number to pre-order a kindle touch 3g. But they won’t actually charge the card until your items are dispatched. However, you may notice a charge of $1. This is the way amazon validates your card, that amount will be refunded into your account shortly.

  31. Steven

Just pre-order a kindle touch from Amazon.com. It seems to be the cheapest option. I can’t find a local store with better deal. Another advantage is there are many kindle covers to choose.

  32. Melisa

Black leather cover with light looks great on my kindle touch. Very recommended if you’re going to buy a new kindle.

  33. Jerry

Does kindle touch has game app??

  34. Gr

    I’m interested in buying Kindle Touch 3G, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6″ E Ink
Display and have it shipped to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam. What are the
other payments/charges that I have to pay aside from the $189 price?

    • Andrew Mc

11-21 USD for shipping to Ho Chi Minh City (depends on preferred shipping speed). You’ll see total sum before your order is completed.

  35. iostream

Is it necessary to buy a power adapter for kindle?

    • Andrew Mc

Without power adapter, you can charge your kindle by connecting it to your laptop using USB cable. However, I think it’s more convenient to have a power adapter.

  36. lazydog

My kindle touch 3g has arrived! I ordered it on Amazon.com last week, they shipped it faster than scheduled.

  37. P O

Are you able to listen to Audio books on the Kindle touch 3G through headphones ?

  38. bomberman

Hi, can you recommend where to buy kindle touch leather covers in Australia? I saw it in a shop but price is very very expensive.

    • Andrew Mc

You may consider buying it from Amazon.com. Shipping should cost around $10, it may be cheaper than local shop.
